End of year newsletter: Milestones in 2015 and prospects for 2016 and Seasons greetings.
Direct Current BV milestones 2015 and outlook 2016
From vision to realisation
We wish you all a merry Christmas and a good new year!
We thank you sincerely for your support over the past year and for following our news on sustainability and DC. We are very satisfied with what has been achieved this year and this was only possible with your support in our mission to make DC central in our society in the near future!
We also thank all our project partners warmly for the great and unflinching cooperation in innovative projects where courage and strength is required. We have confidence in the fact that our cooperation in 2016 will entail groundbreaking innovations!
Milestones in 2015
Within the program Smart Grids IPIN, our project DC=Decent is completed. Here it was mainly about distribution of voltage between different users in the DC grid. In retrospect we were perhaps the most hopeless test case because of the huge resistance we had to overcome. Here we managed to develop the DC grid, fed by the experience we had gained in horticulture. And by developing new pilot areas with street lighting, we have amassed a wealth of knowledge of how a DC distribution should be made.
Within the NEN standards, it appears that it is possible to implement DC within the NEN 1010. Within the DC working group of NEN 1010, we have elaborated the standards in details. We are working hard to establish an NPR as a supplement to the NEN1010 in which a DC system is being worked out, which will serves as an example.
Within the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), we are clearly present, on behalf of the Netherlands, and also on the IEC congress LVDC - Redefining Electricity which was held in October in New Delhi. In the IEC we operate in two committees SEG 4 and SEG 6 and this means that six times per year we give our input and expertise in the field of DC and DC grids during the IEC conferences, each time organized in different countries.
New project DOE DC
Within the DEI program we started the project DOE DC in cooperation with the grid operator and various parties. This project is the continuation of our project DC=Decent which provided us with knowledge and results for scaling up the existing DC grid. DOE DC is being deployed with the following steps:

Final Congress IPIN
In September, the final conference of the IPIN program with 12 participating test cases, was a boost for us and our innovations in horticulture. In the TIS analysis, our DC project scored on all seven points that were being analyzed.
Exclusive distributor of Smart OVL
In October, Luminext BV signed with Direct Current BV an agreement for exclusive distributorship of smart street lighting DC products developed by Direct Current BV.
Femtogrid Energy Solutions
Femtogrid Energy Solutions BV has joined us as a sister company which makes it possible for us to connect solar panels and other renewable energy to our DC grids. Some of the dozens of projects by Femtogrid:
The project MLPM (module level power management) has been successfully completed! The system output of solar micro inverters and power optimizers Femtogrid on shady area, deliver significantly more energy than the standard string inverters. The energy yield in kWh is even higher when directly -via a Femtogrid Power Optimizer is- coupled to a DC grid. We also thank SEAC, TNO, ECN and others, for this great way of working together.
Also, in 2015 the SolaRoad project (in Krommenie is a DC grid with Femtogrid Power optimizers, cabling and inverters) with partners found a progress in the project PV SIN. Herein, other cell technology and, depending on the length of the SolaRoad, a way of connecting the existing AC grid to the available DC grid for road applications are researched and tested.
Prospects for 2016
The current area of 280m2 of the Direct Current lab is located in the most beautiful place in Aalsmeer, but we have grown out of our premises. Therefore, in the course of 2016, we will move to a larger location of 700m2 in order to expand. The new location will be communicated in due course.
Projects in 2016
Some development projects are also underway:
We hope you will continue your support in the new year and we hope to take you with us in the further development of DC systems in 2016. Our motto: DC is the future!
We wish you a merry Christmas and a beautiful end of 2015 and the best wishes for 2016!
With warm regards,
Harry Stokman and Direct Current BV
